Indian Designer Ritu Kumar is one of India’s leading designers and is a proud supporter of India’s contemporary cultural movement. Within the rapidly evolving Indian culture of today, the existing generation of young women are experiencing an increasing amount of influences. The Ritu Kumar Label expresses that in combination with this and in-spite of the vast foreign aesthetic encouragement - that India will always have a unique identity for itself.
Ritu Kumar has developed a unique and popular style of her own, replicating the ancient background and traditions of India’s traditional craftsmanship but in a contemporary and stylish way and is ultimately a designer brand for young urban India. The label's influences are visually global, but its unique and young identity begins from traditional Indian design, creating a sophisticated and intricately crafted look.
Ritu collaborates and works with a variety of talent within the arts and takes a lot of influences from today's generation. The association with these young artists is an open platform where the Label's design house offers a platform where the artists can build their own vision.
Ritu Kumar began her journey within the fashion world with only four hand-block printers and two small tables within a tiny village near Calcutta forty years ago, and was the first Indian designer to introduce the ‘boutique’ culture in India, with the brand name ‘Ritu’.
Today she outstandingly has outlets in 14 cities around India. While Indian designer Ritu Kumar’s specialty lies within traditional Indian clothing that rely heavily on the traditional textile and the embroidery heritage of India, she also now evolves a new and stylish element for the younger buyer, a beautiful collection that redefines traditional and embodies inspiration of contemporary and western silhouettes but with the use basic Indian motifs, printing and embroideries.
