As we say goodbye to summer and there is a definite nip in the air, it’s time to bring out the woollies from storage. Depending on where you live and your general tolerance to the cold, you might be able to get away with light layering rather than full on winter coats. Another advantage of creating an ensemble with multiples separates is the sheer ease of customization especially for those days when the weather is totally random. Plus who doesn’t love getting a little bit more from each piece when you’ve spent a fortune on your entire collection?
All this talk of autumn dressing is great but if you’re scratching your head over the mention of Shraddha Kapoor then you’re probably not alone. It definitely borders on the ridiculous to think that any Bollywood diva who primarily spends most of her time in the tropical heat of India, may have the first clue about layering. Additionally Shraddha Kapoor is a relative nobody in the Indian fashion space considering she’s competing with stalwarts like Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and many other heavy hitters.
Your reservations are completely understandable and even justified to some extent because Shraddha has certainly had her fair share of fashion duds and red carpet fails. But the petite young lass seems to have picked up a few tricks along the way and learnt valuable styling lessons from each failure. Her recent outings for movie promotions, awards shows and interviews have been refreshingly unique and undoubtedly chic.
Shraddha is making a distinctive niche for herself in the sphere of relatable and attainable fashion that regular women can easily aspire to and even afford. Her ensembles regularly feature high street labels like Zara, H&M, River Island as well as lesser-known (and pocket-friendly) Indian designers. She obviously does have her haute couture moments for important events but even those are styled to appeal to a mass audience rather than appease highbrow connoisseurs. She looks like the ideal girl-next-door and doesn’t pretend to be anything else. A quality that’s unfortunately missing in Bollywood as each glamazon tries to out-sexy the other.
At this point the inclusion of Shraddha Kapoor as a fashion inspiration will start to make sense but the layering bit might still seem a bit iffy. It all comes down to being distinctive while also being totally ordinary to her fans. Shraddha’s style philosophy lends itself brilliantly to the concept of layering because it gives her the opportunity to experiment without going over-the-top with labels. Her styling team carefully curates looks for her by meshing several different silhouettes to create one show stopping number. Still need some convincing? Then make way for pictographic proof.
Nearly every Indian woman will relate to the struggle of having to go for a do that necessitates wearing ethnic wear but not having the inclination to do the whole Indian routine. Not to mention the slight chill in the air that makes any kind of exposed skin with lehengas or sarees totally numb. Take a cue from Shraddha’s look featuring dark blue ripped jeans worn with a black tank top and a transparent floral embroidered tunic. The outfit might have been totally blah had stylist Shaleena Nathani not added a waist cinching wide belt to give it a bit of flair.

Wearing a dress when it’s nippy outside is especially challenging. Stockings and leggings help immensely but if you’re a bit bored of the same old hack then try some co-ord magic instead. Shraddha was seen in a Vedika M set featuring a fitted white dress and flowing jacket with pastel panels. The flared jacket was expertly constructed to have most of the detailing on the back and the inside lining to really flaunt the accents.

Knits are synonymous with autumn weather since they’re the easiest to throw on when in a rush and still be snug. Oversized knit tops and jeans are a classic but Shraddha proves knits can also be layered for added oomph to casual dressing. The look is exceptionally reminiscent of Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl so you know you can’t go wrong. She wore a printed mini skirt with a contrasting lilac knit top worn over a collared white shirt. A pair of black stockings and ankle high booties completed this fabulous cold-weather friendly look.

We always knew the white shirt is extremely versatile but Shraddha Kapoor is experimenting with the garment in ways that no one even imagined. She added a sheer embellished mini dress over a white shirt and shorts for a jaw-droppingly simple yet astounding look. A western style high waisted belt brought it all together for this unexpectedly fantastic ensemble.

Speaking of experimentation, Shraddha is also redefining the contemporary pantsuit. She recently pulled off a unique textured silk pantsuit by Saaksha & Kinni layered with a brown bralette. By itself the off-white silk pantsuit ran the risk of looking like sleep wear but the addition of the contrasting tweed bralette gave the entire ensemble a whole new dimension.

We realize that certain celebrity looks may not work for real life. But then there are others that are so flat-out basic yet fabulous that we can’t help but imitate them. One such ensemble is the adorably simple floral cropped jacket by Hemant & Nandita worn with a grey tank and black ripped Zara jeans seen on Shraddha recently. Proving that sometimes all you need is one statement garment to take an outfit from ‘meh’ to ‘YEAH!’.

Shraddha clearly loves the idea of using jackets to transform otherwise ordinary looks because she repeated the formula one again at another event. This time it also included some really fun colour blocking with rather unlikely hues. She wore a blue satin mini skirt with a light grey tank and a military green bomber jacket. The skirt and bomber jacket were both from the label Purple Paisley so despite the opposing hues both pieces had a similar fabric. The combination might seem a bit odd on paper but Shraddha sure makes it work.
