Apart from the anticipation of astounding displays from the fashion fraternity, another factor that makes Lakme Fashion Week an awaited one, is the presence of dazzling celebrities on the ramp as Lakme fashion week showstoppers.
The Lakme fashion week winter festive that began on 26th August 2015, celebrated its opening show in a grand way under the aegis of the designer duo Abu Jani - Sandeep Khosla. Their blingy collection that married retro with contemporary won over the audience without celeb Lakme fashion week showstoppers.
However the front rows of their show were graced by powerful celebs like Nita Ambani and Jaya Bachchan among others dressed in the designer duos’ creations.
Day 1 opened with a display from the gen-next designers and the trail of Lakme fashion week showstoppers began with the third show of the day. Anusha Dandekar (VJ-Model-Singer) walked as a showstopper for Kristy De Cunha, in an edgy printed outfit.
The theme of Kristy’s show, ‘Be’ aware of the rabbit hole’ was a tribute to the free spirited woman and Anusha’s display of free spirit on the ramp in a quirky flowing printed skirt with a layered crop top, captured the essence of the collection.
Lauren Gottlieb, the American beauty from ABCD movie fame walked in a shimmery green outfit for Baggit’s 2015 autumn winter bag collection, carrying an ivory bowler style handbag as an accessory. Lauren brought in some dance moves to the ramp, adding excitement to her showstopper walk.
Nimrat Kaur closed the show for Payal Singhal’s collection ‘Mayaa’, which was inspired by Mayan, Sumerian and Egyptian civilizations. Nimrat ruled the ramp wearing a crimson lehenga and blouse that merged geometric motifs with intertwined embroidery.
Manish Malhotra closed the day by showcasing his first ever menswear collection ‘the gentlemen’s club’. The Bollywood heart-throb Ranbir Kapoor turned showstopper for Manish Malhotra wearing a tailored burgundy velvet jacket paired with a printed brown shirt.
The Day 2 of Lakme fashion week winter festive celebrated the Indian handlooms and textiles, with the theme of ‘Varanasi’. A bevy of celeb Lakme fashion week showstoppers highlighted the designers’ creations that were inspired by the holy city.
Gauhar Khan stunned the audience, in a long macramé woven jacket over a crop top and black embellished lehenga, walking as the showstopper for Rinku Sobti’s chequered and tasselled collection.
Lisa Haydon added charm to Swati Vijaivargie’s collection of bold geometric prints and modern silhouettes. Lisa was breathtaking in a black and gold printed modern skirt paired with colourful crop top with sleeves complementing the skirt.
Tisca Chopra walked as the showstopper for Priyanka Dagdee’s monochrome collection for the label ‘Hastakala’ at the Jabong stage.
Ritu Kumar’s ‘Varanasi weaves’ started with pristine chikankari outfits moving to colourful Benarasi brocades. The show had a closure through Aditi Rao Hydari looking resplendent in a pink benarasi saree draped contemporarily and accessorised with a blingy belt, leggings and traditional hat.
The radiant beauty Dia Mirza brought the curtains down on day 2 in a black embroidered maxi dress, for Anita Dongre’s ‘Grassroot’ collection. Dia Mirza gracefully shared the ramp with all the artisans behind Anita Dongre’s collection which revived Ahir embroidery from Gujarat, Ikat from Karnataka and Hyderabad, Gota Patti from Rajasthan, block printing and the Benarasi weaves.
The spell of celeb Lakme fashion week showstoppers continued with Evelyn Sharma closing the first show of the day for Vasundhara’s collection. The collection had flowing silhouettes accentuated with interesting jewellery using triangular bonds.
The showstopper for Khem by Prem Kumar was Neha Sharma in a short dress that summarised Prem Kumar’s collection in various silhouettes, accented with silver and blue embellishments.
‘Pret a funny’ show by comedian-actor Vir Das was a fun packed display of his debut T-shirts and boxers’ line. The show had a demonstration from many Bollywood celebrities showing their crazy side on the ramp. The Celebs included Kunal Roy Kapoor, Sophie Choudhary, Ali Fazal, Benny Dayal, Cyrus Sahukar, Neil Bhoopalam, Shahzahn Padamsee, Tapsee Pannu and others. Even gorgeous Aditi Rao Hydari turned quirky for this out of the box show.
Shraddha Kapoor ended the day by bringing shimmer on the ramp in a white and silver jumpsuit by Namrata Joshipura. The collection had a cosmic appearance with a generous use of silver sparkle enhanced with LED lights.
Masaba’s showstopper Sooraj Pancholi, the actor from upcoming movie ‘Hero’, was the sole gentleman on the ramp who truly stood out in Masaba’s ladies’ collection. He showcased a playful printed overcoat giving out the essence of Masaba’s avante garde creations. Shahid Kapoor and Mira Rajput made their first public appearance together, playing wonderful off stage Lakme fashion week showstoppers for Masaba.
The fifth show of the day from Bugatti, was a display of comfortable formal shoes that the models wore with structured formal wear. The show saw Arjun Rampal walking in Bugatti’s customised shoes displaying an all black look with dark sunglasses.
The grandeur of Lakme fashion week showstoppers was at its absolute best on Day 5. The first show by Anushree Reddy saw Amy Jackson wearing a pink pastel bridal lehenga and Rana Daggubati displaying a white churidar topped with a black bandgala with Anushree’s signature floral hint on the sleeves.
Malaika Arora scorched the ramp in a golden off shoulder choli worn with a fitted high waist lehenga sporting a thigh high slit, for Arpita Mehta. Ridhi Mehra’s showstopper was Esha Gupta in a black embellished gown with black tulle adding volume to it.
Show 2 saw Kriti Sanon walking as the showstopper, looking fresh in a floral top over nude shimmery lehenga, for Sonaakshi Raj.
Shilpa Shetty Kundra turned showstopper for Divya Reddy’s premiering collection ‘Allure’, in a pleasant yellow and peach embroidered lehenga with golden embroidery.
Tamanna Bhatia was the showstopper for Neeta Lulla’s bridal wear collection which traversed from vintage, contemporary, traditional to the sculpted. Tamanna ruled the ramp in a metallic grey and beige lehenga-choli set.
Chitrangada Singh’s black gown with a dhoti resembling cut paired with a velvet embellished jacket spoke for Tarun Tahiliani’s predominantly black collection accessorised with a nose ring and disc earrings.
Ileana D’ Cruz was the showstopper for Sangria, wearing a black jacket kurta over a floral print black lehenga with a floral golden belt and head accessory.
Gaurav Gupta did not fail to make a statement as he ended the event on a high note. Kareena Kapoor Khan walked as his showstopper in a black sculpted form hugging mermaid gown, with one highlighted long sleeve.
The majestic staircase and sculpture bearing runway was a sight at the end of the show with the confetti guns at work.
Every season we cannot contain the excitement to see our favourite celebs as Lakme fashion week showstoppers. The spectacle of celebs as Lakme fashion week showstoppers in avante garde creations, makes the designers’ line more memorable.
