New year new wave of awards season has been the Bollywood mantra for a number of years now and 2018 has kicked off to a glittering start. It seems like each year sees a bunch of new award events added to an already overflowing list, making it impossible to keep track of who won what. An award for every attendee seems to be the norm (wink! wink!) and the exhaustive categories from the HT Most Stylish Awards, aimed to do just that. Look at the credibility of all the numerous awards with a skeptic side-eye all you want, there is no denying the massive fan interest in the fashion so here’s a low down on who won and what they wore.
All roads led to Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai as the Bollywood glitterati stepped out in their stylish best for the HT Most Stylish Awards 2018. The hilarious Vir Das who started the comic antics by making his entry on a bicycle hosted the event. The pulsating energy has no chance of dying down with performances by Shiamak Davar’s troupe on chart busters like Senorita and Kala Chashma. But it wouldn’t be a Bollywood masala fest without a big dollop of drama and emotion thrown into the mix. There was plenty of that during the various acceptance speeches that ranged from nostalgic odes for family members to barbed comments about harsh critics.
The award show also included as part of its entertainment, an enthralling show by fashion designer extraordinaire and Bollywood favourite, Manish Malhotra. It was a perfectly fitting element for an award show dedicated to honoring those with flawless style (or the money to hire a killer team).

In the interest of building up the excitement, we’ll start with the small awards and move on to the bigger snazzier titles. With so many Bollywood stars gracing the event it’s been tricky to get deets of each winner’s outfit but we’ve got as many as we could get our fashion hungry hands on.
The Indian television veteran attended the do with his wife in a dapper red velvet blazer complete with a crisp white shirt and bow tie.

Big Boss first runner up and newest kid on the Bollywood block, Hina Khan very sweetly admitted to being nervous about getting recognition in the midst of so many industry heavy weights. Despite the butterflies, she still managed to make an impression with dramatic makeup and the ivory and gold Alpana Neeraj jumpsuit.

In a country that’s so obsessed with cricket that every other sport is often overlooked, it was refreshing to see an Indian footballer make his mark on the red carpet. Sunil Chhetri also picked a red blazer but styled it with a funky printed blue tie and slim fitted trousers.

Singer Neeti Mohan did win the award for Most Stylish Music Star but her choice of the teal green sequined gown was a bit of a let down.

Never one to miss a fashion beat, Ayushmaan Khurana owned this look of gentlemanly sophistication. The classic checked blue Canali suit with a hint of the powder blue pocket square is pure perfection.

Sonakshi Sinha’s acceptance speech was all kinds of shade wrapped in intelligently veiled sarcasm. She spoke of the various brickbats thrown at her by critics, from having a large forehead to being large in general and how she never gave a damn about any of it. It helped matters greatly that she slayed in a beige Nikhil Thampi jumpsuit and overcoat ensemble.

Kriti Sanon was absolute sunshine and flapper chic all rolled into one in her canary yellow fringed Deme by Gabriella number.

Expertly dodging comparisons to a safari outfit thanks to his sheer charm is Varun Dhawan. The hard to pull off all neutral look by Shatanu & Nikhil with its medallion brooch detailing isn’t for the fashion awkward and Varun does complete justice to the look.

Taapsee Pannu is another star who isn’t afraid to take some risks and usually turns out phenomenally. Rather than pick one designer from head-to-toe she chose to mix it up with fantastic results. The ultra flared Avaro Figlio trousers ran the risk of looking a tad costumey but the asymmetric sleeve jacket by Ashish N Soni with leather accents and lace bralet salvage the look.

A usual knockout, Sonam Kapoor kind of dropped the ball on this one by taking it a little too far. Between the frayed hem, oversized puffed sleeve, pointed bust darts and ill-fitted volume this Hyun Mi Nielsen couture piece was better suited to the runway than the red carpet. She did however, redeem herself exponentially with her acceptance speech, giving credit to sister Rhea Kapoor for all her hardwork and comparing herself to a blank canvas for her styling team.

Parineeti Chopra has been on top of her game lately and this Sadek Majed Couture Fall mini gown was no different. She also gave an inspiring acceptance speech touching upon her struggles to shed the pounds and concluding by thanking her critics for giving her the much-required motivation.

It might seem odd that Shilpa Shetty was the recipient of an author award unless you’re already aware about her recent foray into the writing world with her book The Great Indian Diet. The insanely toned diva showed off her hot bod in a glittering Reem Acra gown.

New parents Shahid Kapoor & Mira Rajput dazzled in their matching monochrome outfits. He wore a windowpane Gaurav Gupta suit while she flaunts her curves in a fitted Monisha Jaisingh Resort 2016 gown. The clearly smitten Shahid spoke fondly about how he loves Mira’s realness and simplicity despite her young age.

Farhan Akhtar had us wishing for more men in voluminous pants with his well-proportioned ensemble. He was wearing a kurta and pant set layered under a blazer by his all time favourite Indian designer, Rajesh Pratap Singh.

It was kind of ironic that Aishwarya Rai was given the award of Timeless Style Diva when she’s had a lot more fashion misses than hits. But it’s probably more to do with her sheer star power rather than dressing prowess. She failed yet again in a dowdy black and gold embroidered lehenga set by Manish Malhotra. Between the weddingy outfit, basic make up and blah hair, the award seemed like a cruel joke.

Sanjay Dutt paired a fitted black bandhgala with ripped jeans. The humble yet edgy styling was in-sync with his mood as he joked about his recent past of sporting kurtas with traditional Indian caps in jail.

Sridevi’s shine-heavy choice was neither here nor there and we remain on the fence about its style score. She wore glittering rose gold separates by Temperly London styled with a floral rhinestone clutch. It was her heartfelt acceptance speech that had everyone teary eyed as she thanked her husband Boney Kapoor and daughters for being her pillars of strength.

Maybe it’s the Padmavat hangover but Shahid Kapoor bagged another award that evening. To be fair his ultra cool suit did deserve another round of applause.

Style maven Deepika Padukone also bagged one of the more prestigious awards of the evening. Dressed in a Sabyasachi saree and jewellery, it was clear she was still in Padmavat promotion mode. She wore the same saree to a friend’s weding recently breaking the myth that celebrities don’t repeat their clothes. She looked resplendent but needs to bid adieu to the flat hair.

The quick-witted Akshay Kumar might have bagged himself a Jeep alongwith his award as he put his awardee on the spot by asking if it entitled him to one. The solid blazer, white shirt, checked trousers and round frame glasses already had him trending but it was his characteristic dry humour that won hearts.

Rekha wore her signature gold kanjeevaram saree topped with tradition jewellery, white gajra and bold maroon-red lip. She revealed her dedication for wearing kanjeevaram sarees comes from her memory of her mother wearing them. She went on to confess that wearing the saree is like having her mother’s protection and spirit around her.

In an interesting twist, yesteryear star Zeenat Amman presented the Superstar of Style Award to Amitabh Bachchan. Both of them were contemporaries at one point in their careers and while Zeenat retired to have a family, the Big B have never ceased to amaze with his transformations. Proving that age has nothing to do with style, Amitabh in his checked blue blazer and bow tie could give any of the young guns a run for their money.

Apart from the winners who covered the entire spectrum of stylish folk in Bollywood, there were plenty of other sizzlers who deserve a honourable mention. Nushrat Bharucha and Shibani Dandekar looked white hot. Vaani Kapoor’s Redemption naked dress, Diana Penty’s fur and sequin Manish Malhotra creation and Sophie Choudry’s bodice style gown with a train were all worthy showstoppers.
