Ever wondered what it’s like to work in the heart of the fashion industry and to help create those glossy magazine spreads and catwalk ready looks? We caught up with fashion stylist Esha Amin to find out what it is like to be a stylist for the stars.
Esha Amin spent years working in India’s export houses and when she decided she wanted a new challenge made the move to become a fulltime stylist at Style cell-by Anaita Shroff Adajania. Since then she has had a colourful career as a freelance stylist. Her projects include styling several Bollywood celebrities, working on magazine, TV and advertisement shoots for brands ranging from Fusion Beats, to Roger La Viale.
Amin says that going from head designer to stylist “was a wonderful transition” and the best thing about being a stylist compared with being a designer is that “no two projects or two work days are the same. There is always something new to look forward to and to learn every day.”
When Amin is not working on a shoot she can usually be found either doing research, going through designer collections, or going to meetings and fittings.
On the difference between styling for the fashion pages of a magazine and styling Bollywood stars, Amin explains that “When it’s a magazine shoot you can cheat with elements such as the fit or length of clothes, the fashion trends and concepts are the forte.” On the other hand when you are dressing Bollywood stars it isn’t just the fashion trends you have to pay close attention to but a myriad of factors. It is important to understand their “likes, dislikes, body image, their public image and the nature of the event or shoot.” You can’t use the same tricks as you would for a magazine shoot and therefore fittings need to be perfect and it needs to be a collaborative effort in order to create a look that has the desired effect and that the celebrity feels comfortable in.
In 2014 Esha decided to combine her love of styling and designing by launching her own fashion label. It is relatively new and Esha is still finding her feet but the response to her clothes has been great. “Designing is a freedom of expression for me and I love it just as much as styling.” To describe her label Amin explains that it is all about “Clean cut silhouettes, but at its centre it is a fun and effortless women’s label.” The Esha Amin label is set to have a bright future, with many celebrities having already been spotted wearing her beautiful clothes, including Malaika Arora Khan and Esha Gupta.
For all you budding fashion designers or stylists out there Esha's advice is that “There is a lot to learn around us, so keep exploring because you never know when inspiration will strike!”
