Bollywood celebrities have forever been style inspirations for young women across the country.
Women look up to the best dressed Bollywood actresses for style cues and sometimes blindly emulate them - such is the aspirational nature associated with Bollywood fashion. It does not come as a surprise then that Bollywood is the primary influencer in setting fashion trends in the country that is starved of other fashion inspirations.
With the internet providing instant access to the public appearances of celebrities, their every fashion move, be it the way they walk to what they wear, come under scrutiny.
Today, we too decided to play Bollywood fashion police to bring to you our list of the best dressed Bollywood actresses on the red carpet this year. As we put together our list, we realised that while there have been many memorable sightings of Bollywood celebrities, there have also been appearances that we would want you to avoid like a plague. We show you those in what we think are the worst dressed Bollywood actress’ sightings this year. So without further ado, here is our list of the best and the worst dressed Bollywood actresses this year on the red carpet.
Without doubt the best dressed Bollywood actress today, Sonam Kapoor never ceases to amaze us with her sartorial choices. Be it traditional Indian wear or hot couture outfits, the svelte actress wears them with confidence and aplomb like no other. Our favourite look from the actress so far this year is her appearance at Cannes in a structured electric blue Ralph and Russo couture gown. We loved her choice of accessories - sparkling Chopard earrings and a pair of sky high Giuseppe Zanotti sandals. With such an impeccable taste and an eye for nothing but the best, we are not surprised that she is the uncrowned best dressed Bollywood actress in town.
The actress has caught our eye in the past for experimenting with new and daring styles to give us chic public appearances, earning the reputation of being one of the best dressed Bollywood actresses. But when it came to the red carpet, Kareena Kapoor has been partial to designers like Manish Malhotra and played it safe with conventional designs. So this time around, at the Filmfare Glamour and Style Awards, when she chose a striking yellow Roberto Cavalli Atelier gown, complete with bead detailing and paired it with an equally sparkling Judith Leiber minaudière, we just could not take our eyes off her. To top it off, she was even crowned the most glamorous star of the year at the award ceremony; an award that we think was well deserved.
She may not be as popular as Sonam Kapoor in the international fashion circles, but Deepika Padukone is quite the fashionista in her own right. Her signature style has her hair done up in an up-do, with oxblood lips and a saree or a gown that flatters her delicate frame. This appearance on our list has nothing novel on offer but still makes it here because of the sheer beauty of the ensemble. With hair that is pulled back, an exquisite Sabyasachi saree and red lips which elevated her red carpet style, Deepika looked every bit the reigning queen of Bollywood.
Ms. Chopra’s personal style has come a long way after being criticised by the Bollywood fashion police for a limited repertoire that spanned sheath dresses and princess cut outfits. The globetrotting ex-Miss World now experiments with outfits from various designers - both upcoming and established with a renewed confidence and devil-may-care attitude. It comes as little surprise that she made it to our best dressed Bollywood actresses list, thanks to a series of stunning appearances this year. The most impressive of all of course was this understated Zac Posen coral number that she wore to The Bob Dylan tribute as a part of the pre-Grammy festivities this year. The fit of the dress, the messy hair and the gold Kotur clutch made us go wow! What do you think of this look?
Now that we have seen a few of the best dressed Bollywood actresses, it is time to see who are the women who drew the ire of the Bollywood fashion police for their sartorial choices. While we were not all for calling them the ‘worst’ dressed Bollywood actresses, our reservations were gone after one look at their ensembles. Do you agree with our selection?
A favourite target of the Bollywood fashion police, Vidya Balan has forever drawn criticism for either her tacky fashion choices or her repetitive style. Of late, she has played it safe with rustic anarkali suits and sarees that suit her body type but she managed to deliver a disaster even with a Kajeevaram saree at the Filmfare Awards this year. A dazzling gold saree, an ill-fitting blouse, whitewashed makeup and over-the-top accessories meant that she was making it onto all the ‘worst dressed Bollywood actresses’ lists this year.
Nargis Fakhri put on a disastrous display during the Filmfare Awards this year in Sonaakshi Raaj dress that looked like a full sleeved top paired with harem pants. The choice of colour, makeup and hairdo had the Bollywood fashion police screaming sacrilege. We’d rather she had picked a nice gown to show off her well-toned body or at least redeemed this one by accessorising and styling it better - that would have prevented her from occupying this spot on the worst dressed Bollywood actresses’ list.
Though we are playing Bollywood fashion police, we feel that an odd bad appearance does not make someone the worst dressed Bollywood actress. However, this dress that Kalki wore to the Filmfare awards meant that she had to be featured on the list. The Nikhil Thampi fusion saree without any great fabric to speak of paired with shining golden pants and over the top jewellery left us wanting for less! The whole look with too many distracting elements gave the impression of trying to cram too much in one ensemble - something that Kalki normally refrains from. Thumbs down from us for this warrior princess look.
This was our list of the best and the worst dressed Bollywood actresses on the red carpet this year. Do you think there was any particular dress on the red carpet that should have been featured in this list?
