Apart from the exquisite, heavy, embroidered and embellished traditional wear designed by Indian fashion masters; Indian fashion also boasts of chic and trendy contemporary wear. Instead of relying on international designers for contemporary fashion and styles, there are a plethora of Indian fashion designers who create stunning, ultra stylish western ensembles.

The designers with some of the best outfits showcasing contemporary Indian Fashion this year include Nikhil Thampi, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Pankaj & Nidhi.

At Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014, Nikhil Thampi showcased his collection titled ‘Untamed’. His collection showcases contemporary Indian fashion in a non-conformist and punk manner. His runway show first opened with models in white ensembles with his primary trend for this collection of high waisted pants and structured silhouettes. He also displayed his signature style of cut outs that gave outfits an alluring twist to the classic jumpsuit. Thampi further styled the outfits with brooches that highlighted the distinct colours such as rose, dusty nude, tan and white. Using fabrics such as leather and experimenting with colour palettes including maroons, reds and peaches as the show progressed, Thampi definitely exhibited his versatility by bringing edgy contemporary Indian fashion to the runway!

The Best of Recent Contemporary Indian Fashion- Untamed by Nikhil Thampi

Rajesh Pratap Singh showcased his interesting ‘Blue Blood’ collection this year at the Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week Spring/Summer for 2015. His contemporary styles used raw denim and completely natural indigo that definitely made his collection one of the best because of his creative use of the fabric! The collection boasted models that were dressed in tops, kurtas, skirts and demin pants that were free flowing. The designer also paired the denim fabric with jackets that had patchwork, chikan embroidery and polka appliques. Incorporating khadi linen weaves and stainless steel that was blended with denim most certainly displayed innovative contemporary Indian fashion at it’s best.

The Best of Recent Contemporary Indian Fashion- Blue Blood by Rajesh Pratap Singh

Designer power couple Pankaj & Nidhi were undoubtedly easy to get swooned by. Their collection called ‘House of Cards’ at Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2014 was spectacular! The runway was set with Flamenco dancers that exhibited quick footwork with models walking the ramp to a backdrop consisting of cards.  Models were seen wearing evening dresses embellished in gold with prints of cards. Jackets with Jodhupuri pants, applique and gold long dresses, tuxedos with silk shirts, draped pants and card printed dresses caught audiences eyes as these models lit up the stage in these creative outfits that captured the drama and zest of the dancers in the backdrop! Contemporary Indian fashion depicted in a unique context, Pankaj and Nidhi’s collection definitely wowed the crowd!
