The most awaited fashion extravaganza of the year - The Lakme Fashion Week 2015 Winter/Festive will be held in Mumbai this month. What makes the event is extra special is the fact that the Fashion Week completes 15 years in the fashion industry this year.
Given the amount of hype and the spotlight on the event, it was a given that the organisers would play their best card for the opening show.
It did not come as a surprise when it was announced that veteran designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla would open the show this year. Having spent more than two decades in the fashion industry in India, the duo has dressed the who’s who of Bollywood and the fashion industry and also carved a niche for themselves both in India and overseas. Surprisingly, this is first time that they will be showcasing their collection at the Lakme Fashion Week and they just could not have chosen a better year to do that.
Masters at reviving ancient Indian crafts and supporting thousands of craftsmen, the designer duo have clothed the likes of Dame Judy Dench, the lovely ladies of the Bachchan household and fashionistas like Sonam Kapoor.
Speaking about the opportunity, they said, "We are absolutely thrilled to be back at Lakmé Fashion Week to open the upcoming celebratory season. This platform brings back many cherished memories for the both of us. Expect a befitting opening act, this season, as we reinvent the traditional to present an exciting, fresh take on fashion deemed fit for the youthful, modern day diva celebrating her harmonious, republican spirit."
The collection that will be on display will be called ‘Jawani Jaaneman’, a tribute to the iconic bodysuit that the duo designed for Parveen Babi for the movie Namak Halal. Given the inspiration, we are certain that one will get to see lots of glitter, gold and glamour. As usual, their clothes will be extravagant but we are betting that they will be presented with a twist to suit the sensibilities of the modern Indian woman. Known for their love for chikankari, zardosi and mirror work and the colour white, we expect the collection to feature outfits that exude style, sophistication and elegance. Given their focus on the modern day diva, one will surely see lots of fluidic silhouettes and clean lines with an emphasis on comfort.
What’s more, in another first, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla will be opening the Lakme Fashion Week at an offsite location that offers a larger canvas to display their extraordinary creations! Stay tuned to this space for the updates from the collection that will be unveiled on the 25th of August in Mumbai.
