The Who Wore What: The Bollywood Scoop on Bridal Lehengas and Sarees
07 th Nov 2014

Those of you who follow ‘Bollywood fashion’ closely must have seen the bridal lehenga and various other outfits that Dia Mirza wore for her wedding ceremonies recently. Bollywood actors have a larger than life persona not just on screen, but also off it. Naturally, there is a lot of curiosity about their wedding outfits when a Bollywood wedding is around the corner. Reams of newsprint are spent speculating whose designs the bride and the groom will be wearing on their big day. Little wonder that the bridal lehengas and sarees worn during the wedding become the talk of the town once the pictures are revealed.

For all the bridal fashion enthusiasts out there, we have put together a collection of bridal lehengas and sarees worn by some popular Bollywood brides for their real life weddings.

Dia Mirza

Dia Mirza has been in the news lately following her wedding with Sahil Sangha, with the spotlight on the gorgeous bridal lehengas she wore for her wedding and reception ceremony. For the wedding, she opted for an unconventional but traditional sharara with a kurta and a dupatta by Ritu Kumar.  The beige kurta and sharara were decorated with ornate and heavy zardosi work that reminded one of the bygone Mughal era. The green and blue brocade stripes in the outfit matched the bright green dupatta. The matching pearl and emerald jewellery added a royal touch to the ensemble.

Esha Deol

For her wedding with Bharat Takhtani, Esha Deol wore a scintillating Kanjeevaram saree redesigned by Neeta Lulla with a brilliantly embellished blouse. The zari border of the sari was further accented with ornate sequin work. The intricate embroidery and zardosi work on the saree and the blouse changed the entire look of the traditional Kanjeevaram Saree, so much that it resembled a bridal lehenga. Esha paired her wedding outfit with traditional gold jewellery – stone encrusted maang tika, gold jhumkas, gold waist band and a couple of necklaces with an antique finish. She looked resplendent in the bridal lehenga-like saree paired with traditional jewellery that was a winning combination of south and north Indian elements in one ensemble.

Kareena Kapoor

When Kareena Kapoor exchanged vows with Saif Ali Khan, she wore a heavily embellished heirloom royal bridal lehenga that was originally her mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore’s wedding ensemble. The outfit was painstakingly restored and modified by ace designer Manish Malhotra. The gold and rust bridal lehenga comprised of a long kurta paired with a farshi pyjama with green coloured satin border decorated with gota, paired with a rich embroidered dupatta.

Later, she changed into a maroon bridal lehenga with a cropped choli and a lavishly embellished dupatta, designed by Manish Malhotra. Kareena also wore a pink kurta paired with a lehenga and choli in various shades of pink for a post wedding party.

Aishwarya Rai

Unlike other Bollywood brides who wore bridal lehengas, Miss World Aishwarya Rai married Abhishek Bachchan wearing a dazzling traditional silk saree. The Swarovski crystals and the real gold threads in the saree designed by Neeta Lulla lent it a rich and extravagant look. Aishwarya paired the saree with gold jewellery studded with uncut diamonds and emeralds and looked nothing less than royalty.

Shilpa Shetty

Another bride who ditched the bridal lehenga in favour of a saree was Shilpa Shetty. She married London-based businessman Raj Kundra in a private ceremony clad in a glittering red saree, embellished with Swarovski crystals. She complemented the outfit with diamonds and kundan jewellery that only enhanced the beauty of the ensemble.
