To give you a feel of how a celebrity gets married, here is a look at some of the big celebrity weddings in India.
Actress Aishwarya Rai married Abhishek Bachchan in a private ceremony way back in 2007. The wedding ceremony, despite being a decade old is still one of the most talked about big celebrity weddings in India, thanks to it being a hush-hush affair. The wedding ceremony was held at Prateeksha, the residence of the first family of Bollywood. From the photographs that were made public, we could make it that it was a lavish affair, despite being low-key. Aishwarya’s wedding saree was an all-gold number designed by Neeta Lulla and finished with Swarovski and gold thread work. She wore a heavy necklace and a waistband made of diamonds and emerald and is said to have received over 15 kilos of gold and diamonds as gifts during the wedding! Chef’s from Taj were specially commissioned to prepare the lavish wedding meal that was reported to be a sinfully delectable spread! One big fat Indian wedding indeed!
As far as Indian celebrity weddings go, this was perhaps the biggest of the big celebrity weddings in India, with the wedding expenses going up to Rs. 4 crore way back in 2009. Before you say it, let us tell you that the cost does not include Shilpa’s 20 carat diamond ring or her famous red Tarun Tahiliani outfit that was studded with Swarovski crystals. The royal wedding was held at Bawa Villa in Khandala and comprised of the mehendi, sangeet and the wedding ceremonies. It was a private affair but the couple posed for shutterbugs soon after. The icing on the cake was the grand reception held at Grand Hyatt hotel in Mumbai that saw seemingly every A-lister of B-town in attendance.
Shilpa sizzled in an exquisite golden saree-gown that flattered her curves. To give you an idea of the opulence of the ensemble, we’d like to tell you that it was embellished with over 8000 crystals and was finished with a heavy neckpiece studded with rubies and diamonds. When money can buy you something so exclusive, why not!
Actor Riteish Deshmukh tied the knot with Genelia D’Souza in 2012 in two ceremonies - a Maharashtrian Hindu ceremony as per his traditions and a Church wedding as per Genelia’s family traditions.
The wedding was preceded by the Sangeet ceremony for which Genelia chose a white lehenga. The Hindu wedding took place at the plush Grand Hyatt hotel where the groom arrived on a ‘ghodi’ in a white sherwani that was finished with a multi-layered pearl necklace. Genelia was dressed like a typical Maharashtrian bride in a red Neeta Lulla saree that reportedly cost over 15 lakhs. It was complemented with traditional Maharashtrian jewellery.
The Church wedding was an elegant affair where the bride was a vision in a white gown and Riteish looked dapper in a suit with a bow-tie.
The highlight of the big fat wedding was the reception. As with most celebrity weddings in India, the reception was a star studded affair that was attended by the who’s who of Bollywood and also the top brass of the government. Genelia chose a dark peach embroidered lehenga that she accented with a heavy uncut diamond necklace and Riteish complemented her outfit well with a black embellished sherwani.
Kareena married boyfriend Saif Ali Khan in a low-key ‘registered wedding ceremony’ that was held at Saif’s residence. But in true Bollywood style, the couple and their families ensured that the events preceding and following the wedding ceremonies were big fat affairs, replete with lavish preparations on a massive scale.
The Sangeet ceremony took place at Kareena’s residence and was attended by close friends from the film fraternity. The mehendi ceremony took place at Mumbai’s iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel which has played host to many a big celebrity weddings in the past. The Mumbai reception saw Kareena in red lehenga by her favourite designer Manish Malhotra. The dazzling outfit was finished with an elaborate necklace studded with diamonds and rubies.
For her Delhi reception, Kareena looked quintessentially royal in a pink lehenga teamed with a kurta-type choli, that bore a striking resemblance to the begums of the yore.
After the festivities, the couple also posed for a wedding portrait in 'Shahi' style.
Kareena chose to wear the Pataudi family heirloom lehenga that was also worn by her mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore. The outfit was specially restored for this purpose and we must say, she looked every bit a part of the royal family.
One of the more recent big celebrity weddings in India was that of actor Dia Mirza with producer Sahil Sangha. In true Bollywood style, the festivities spanned over three days and involved lots of designer outfits that became the talk of the town. As most big celebrity weddings go, this one also was a private affair, held at a farmhouse in Delhi. Complete with mehendi, sangeet, pheras and reception ceremonies, the gala affair stood out for its fresh and novel decor and more importantly because the couple experimented with unusual colours for their wedding outfits.
For the sangeet, Dia wore a Ritu Kumar anarkali in yellow that was done up with gold thread and dori work with fuchsia accents. A dazzling fuchsia dupatta completed her look.
Her choice of offbeat colours continued in the haldi ceremony as well, where she adorned an ink blue Anita Dongre lehenga with gota patti embroidery. But the highlight of this celebrity wedding was Dia’s wedding outfit - an Awadh-inspired ensemble created by designer Ritu Kumar. A melange of turquoise and gold with a heavy mughal design, the farshi pyjama, kurta and dupatta made Dia look every bit like royalty.
For the reception, Dia wore a peach and gold Shantanu and Nikhil lehenga - a commendable choice because sightings of this beautiful colour are few and far between at Indian weddings!
Shahid Kapoor broke a million hearts when he decided to ‘settle down’ with the dainty little Ms. Mira Rajput last year. The wedding was perhaps the most talked about among the big celebrity weddings of the year, despite it being a low-key event. The wedding was preceded by a Mehendi and Sangeet ceremony where Shahid and Mira danced to popular Bollywood numbers.
The wedding was a traditional Punjabi ceremony, held at a farmhouse in Delhi and was attended by about 50 family members and close friends.
The couple later changed into designer outfits and posed for the press outside the reception venue, The Trident in Gurgaon. Mira looked ravishing in a pink Anamika Khanna lehenga that she dressed up with a navaratna necklace and a jhoomar on the forehead. Shahid looked handsome as ever in a white sherwani designed by friend Kunal Rawal. The reception was a closed door ceremony where the bride is said to have worn an Anamika Khanna again and Shahid wore a bandhgala suit.
The party continued in Mumbai as well where the couple threw a grand reception at the Palladium Hotel. The who’s who of Bollywood was in attendance and the newly weds were the cynosure of all eyes, as expected. Shahid looked dapper in a three piece Kunal Rawal suit while Mira looked every bit the gorgeous bride in a contemporary Manish Malhotra floral embroidered lehenga. Jewels from Nirav Modi’s collection added sparkle to her ensemble and made the otherwise simple outfit look stunning.
The most recent Bollywood wedding that created a lot of buzz in the media was that of Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover. The buzz was all thanks to the gossip surrounding Bipasha’s much-publicised failed relationships and Karan’s two broken marriages. But the couple took it in their stride and actually went all out to post pictures from their ‘Monkey Wedding’ as they called it, all over social media.
Bipasha was glowing at the Mehendi ceremony in a floral Anushree Reddy gown that she paired with a floral band on her head. Karan could not keep his eyes off his bride, which is illustrated by the above photo. The wedding was a mix of Punjabi and Bengali rituals.
Bipasha was dressed in a dazzling red Sabyasachi saree and Karan complemented her well in a white kurta and dhoti. After the private ceremony, the couple threw a grand reception party for the members of the film and television fraternity.
The reception was held at St. Regis and the venue was in one word - dreamy! With all the details conceptualised by Bipasha herself, the personal touch was evident because every single guest was seen gushing about how ethereal the venue looked. The good looking couple was also dressed in their designer best - Bipasha in a golden Sabyasachi lehenga with a jacket style choli and Karan in a black and white tuxedo. One of the biggest celebrity weddings of this year, the monkey wedding was indeed a visual feast!
