Indian weddings are usually grand and elaborate affairs comprising of a number of events like the haldi ritual, mehendi ceremony, the sangeet celebrations, the traditional wedding and the wedding reception.
There are three main types of Indian wedding dresses worn by women during the different occasions of Indian weddings and these consist of the salwar suit or the anarkali suit, the lehenga and the saree. Here are some tips when selecting these Indian wedding dresses for these different occasions.
Indian wedding dresses are typically bright and usually simple all white and all black outfits are avoided as Indian wedding events are usually fun, colourful and loud. White and black Indian wedding dresses are worn although, when these dresses are heavily embellished or embroidered.
The first event that takes place is usually the haldi ritual. The couple has different events at their respective homes for this event where turmeric paste is painted on the bride to be and the groom. Indian wedding dresses that are old and can afford stains are typically worn to this function as clothes can be stained with the turmeric. Indian wedding dresses like a salwar kameez in colours like orange, cream and pink that are flowy are usually recommended.
The mehendi ceremony is where henna is painted on the bride’s hands and guests who attend this ceremony can paint their hands as well. Indian wedding dresses worn at mehendi ceremonies are usually more casual consisting of a pretty tunic with a long skirt or a simple salwar or anarkali suit. Salwar kameez with tones of bright colours like red, orange and yellows are common.
The most anticipated and lively night of all the wedding functions is the sangeet party. This occasion is filled with Bollywood music and a night full of dancing! There are several options to chose from for Indian wedding dresses for this event! Heavy outfits, bright colours and bling are definitely the key essentials although outfits should be comfortable enough to dance in. A glamorous anarkali, an embellished lehenga or gorgeous cocktail dresses are perfect for this event!
Wedding ceremonies are more traditional compared to the mehendi and the sangeet. Indian wedding dresses like sarees and lehengas in warm hues with gold detailing is common. Different styles of sarees and lehengas in silk, chiffon, cotton and crepe look stunning too and when sarees and lehengas are not feasible, western outfits like long dresses that can be accessorised with bangles and a purse are appropriate too.
Finally, for the wedding reception and dinner, cooler tones like blues with silver highlights is also common. Wearing black outfits are also only usually acceptable at the reception. Elegant gowns, sarees and lehengas adorned with beautiful diamond jewellery or jadau looks great at receptions!
