Cricketers and Bollywood starlets finding love and getting hitched seems to have become a theme of sorts with the current crop of young and ambitious celebrities. Yuvraj Singh and Hazel Keech started it all with their grand fun filled wedding held in different cities across India. Zaheer Khan and Sagarika Ghatge have followed suit with their own extravagant wedding celebrations. And the rumour mills are abuzz about the possibility of the much-anticipated Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma wedding as well. Whether there is any truth to these churned out stories remains to be seen but for now it’s best to feast on the pictures from the simply magical nuptials of Zaheer and Sagarika.
For the uninitiated Sagarika made her Bolly debut with Shahrukh Khan starrer Chak De India. Ironically the movie portrayed the struggles and victory of a women’s hockey team representing India in the worldwide championship. Little did she realize that playing one of the several protagonists of the movie would so closely resemble the life of her future husband, a renowned cricket player in the Indian cricket team.
Zaheer and Sagarika’s love affair was a quiet and secretive one as the couple values their privacy above everything. Thankfully for us, that was not the case for their engagement and wedding as they were all too happy to pose for the press and share snippets of the events through their social media. The loved up couple looked regal and resplendent throughout the proceedings and a critique of the bride and groom’s sartorial choices is in order.
It all started with an Instagram announcement from Zaheer captioned “Never laugh at your wife’s choices, you are one of them. Partners for life!!! #engaged”. Sagarika later admitted that it was a secret proposal planned and executed by Zaheer who was also armed with the perfect ring to woo his ladylove. They threw a massive bash at a Mumbai hotel to party in style with all their friends. Zaheer wore a taupe suit with a white shirt and tan shoes. The trousers could’ve done with a bit of hemming but his one flaw can be forgiven because Sagarika was a vision. She wore a chartreuse hued, off shoulder, structured gown by Monisha Jaisingh. The monotone creation with its fitted bodice flowing into a breezy silhouette was an exceptional choice. She kept the styling minimal with only earrings and side swept hair.

Since both of them come from different religious backgrounds, they decided to forgo a traditional wedding ceremony and chose to have a registered marriage instead. It was a small ceremony held at one of their homes and attended only by family and a few close friends. Zaheer wore a baby peach self printed Raghuvendra Rathore kurta churidhar set while Sagarika opted for a classic bridal red Sabyasachi Mukherjee saree. She contrasted the very traditional saree with an offbeat silver choker set creating a beautifully proportioned ethnic and modern ensemble.

Just because the wedding ceremony was an intimate and somber occasion doesn’t mean the couple didn’t want to let their hair down with their extended family and friends. Invitations had already been sent out and the who’s who of Bollywood and the cricketing fraternity had RSVPed their attendance to the lavish celebrations that followed.

The events kicked off with a cocktail party on the evening of the wedding. It was held at the banquets of the St. Regis Hotel in Mumbai. Zaheer chose a basic yet dressy black velvet bandhgala. Sagarika look every bit the blushing bride in a peach embroidered half saree. She stuck with her contrasting of antique gold embroidery with oxidized silver jewellery and the paring looked super trendy and fresh.

A Sangeet or “another dancing night” as Sagarika christened it to her Instagram followers, was held after the cocktail. Zaheer went for a tailored blue stripe blazer worn with a crisp white shirt and dark trousers. Sagarika looked stunning in a custom designed Falguni and Shane Peacock creation. The unconventional grey colour might have been hard to pull off but Sagarika owned the look especially after pairing it with a distinct diamond and ruby set.

Breaking with convention yet again, the sangeet was followed by a mehendi afternoon. Even though traditionally the mehendi ceremony precedes the sangeet. Zaheer stuck with his love for blue that also happens to be the colour of his team jersey. This time he went for something more ethnic as he wore a blue Nehru jacket teamed with a blue kurta and white churidhar. Sagarika wore a gorgeous turquoise green lehenga by Anita Dongre and finished off the look with pearl and kundan jewellery.

The grand wedding culminated with the reception at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai. Both the bride and groom definitely saved the best for last as they both looked ravishing for their final innings. The man in blue Zaheer went with the colour once more in a majestic bandhgala suit. Sagarika donned a beige and gold Sabyasachi Mukherjee lehenga with a front wrapped sheer dupatta. She accessorized the Benarasi lehenga with a rather large and magnificent sparkling gold choker set.

If you thought that was all, then the star couple had one more surprise up their well-heeled sleeves. Right after the wedding celebrations they posed for the cover of Harper’s Bazaar magazine. Aptly titled the ‘Just Married’ issue the feature included special pictures of the couple inside. The couple’s cover looks were customized by designer duo Shantanu and Nikhil. Zaheer wore an all-black suit with a ruffle front held together by a waist belt. Metallic accents on the pockets and a pair of Christian Louboutin moccasins finished his look. Sagarika wore a mustard yellow tube gown with matching ruffle detailing. A statement necklace and earrings by Faberge rounded off her haute couture ensemble.
