Dressing for an Indian Destination Wedding
21 st Jun 2015

Gone are the days when wedding ceremonies were held in a temple or a wedding hall and guests dressed in their traditional best. Today’s weddings are all about having different themes, global food and exotic locations. Weddings at exotic locations call for destination appropriate dressing. In case you are going to be a guest at an Indian destination wedding, here is a guide to dressing for one.

Indian destination weddings are fashionable affairs, with a lot of attention going towards décor and the theme. Most Indian destination weddings happen along the beach, so today we focus on dressing for a beach side wedding. Since we are talking sun, sand and the ocean, you can safely set aside your bulky lehengas and silk sarees if you are attending a beach wedding. What you need are light and breezy clothes that are perfect for the beach side. Here is an event-wise breakup of what you can pack for an Indian destination wedding.

Beach-side party

This needs a great swimsuit, a pair of extra-large shades, a wide brimmed hat and lots of sun screen. Swimsuits in tropical prints with sexy cut-outs are in this season. Pack at least two swimsuits so that you can alternate between them in case of a prolonged stay. You will obviously need a kaftan as well to throw on your swimwear. We think that a beach kaftan in a bright colour like coral like this Omar Mansoor kaftan is perfect for the day – given that it is vibrant and striking.

Evening Cocktail Party

A cocktail party in the evening during an Indian destination wedding calls for a dress that is classy, comfortable and stylish without being too over the top. Some sheer and shimmer will work perfectly on a starlit night. Don’t shy away from wearing black- simply accessorise it with a lot of bling to break the monotony. If you are up for wearing black, then we would pick this gorgeous Silvereene gown with glimmering stone work in the bodice.

The embellishments add the right amount of glitter to the outfit and make it stand out.

If you want to make a bolder statement, then we think that this beautiful cascading Siddartha Tytler dress is perfect for you. While the sheer fabric gives it a risqué look, we believe that the golden accents of the dress will be the highlight of the dress on a moonlit night.

Wedding Ceremony

For an Indian destination wedding, give the usual sarees and lehengas a miss and go in for fluidic pre-draped sarees that are hot this season. Pre-draped sarees are not just easy to wear, but they are also extremely comfortable at a beach wedding. What’s more, they are designed to flatter your curves!

If you ask us, we’d say that this gorgeous pink pre-draped saree by Jyotsna Tiwari is a great choice for a beach wedding. It already has a shimmering blouse and belt - all you need to do is to simply pair it with some elegant accessories and you are ready to breezy through the wedding in style.

And if a saree is not your style, then we suggest you go in for an anarkali suit in colours like coral, peach, mint green or aqua that will look great against the sun and sand.

Post-Wedding party

If you are attending a post-wedding day party by the beach, then go in for a flowy gown, paired with flat sandals and a string of pearls. For an occasion like this, choose a full length gown in aqua accents like blue or sea green. Take a look at this gorgeous sea green gown with macramé, knotting and bead detailing that can give you a look that will fit the queen!

Indian destination weddings are amazing occasions to flaunt your style-savvy avatar and put your best fashionable foot forward! In case you have another favourite destination wedding style, we’d love to hear what it is.
