We realise that 2017 has well and truly arrived. The month of January is nearly over and everyone had settled in rather comfortably into the New Year. However until one of the celebrity couples from our previous predictions post decides to surprise, shock and delight us with an impromptu wedding, we need to curb our cravings for Indian celebrity wedding fodder. In the absence of any new deliciousness on that front, we have no choice but to look back and ohh and ahh at some heart melting Indian celebrity wedding outfits from 2016.
In an effort to chase away the post-wedding blues before yet another slew of glamour infused Indian celebrity weddings come our way and make us swoon all over again, here is a rundown of the best of the best from 2016.
It’s no secret that a wedding is ALL about the bride! From beginning to end nearly every wedding is a reflection of the bride’s personality and taste with maybe a teeny bit of the groom thrown in the mix somewhere. Most men are happy to let their lady love shine because quite frankly they’re hardly interested in the process of wedding planning as long as the end result is spectacular and is within the vicinity of some kind of budget.
While every bride is resplendent and special in her own unique way there are those who simply take your breath away in their bridal finery. In a year when so many gorgeous women decided to break hearts and tie the knot picking a few was no easy feat. Our top brides are the ones who stuck to tradition but let their own style shine through making their sartorial choices just so modern and current. Bipasha Basu looked every bit the Bong bombshell that she is in her bright red lehenga complete with a full matha patti, nose ring and bindis on her forehead. Asin also channelled her inner South Indian goddess in an elegant yet equally striking gold and neutral number. Lisa Haydon in her ballgown style white wedding dress sans makeup and a pretty floral wreath gave boho-chic brides every where #stylegoals like no other. Lastly Urmila Matondkar may have arrived to her happily-ever-after a little later in life, but arrive she did in an orange-red lehenga ensemble that brought out her inner glow like she wasn’t a day over 25.
We’ve already established that brides rule all when it comes to weddings and grooms just need to show up on time wearing suitable attire. The term ‘suitable attire’ can be extremely fluid and open to interpretation especially when being translated by a less than style savvy groom. But every so often there comes around a true gentleman who knows his fashion A-B-Cs and is determined to get it right and have everyone floored while also blowing up the myth that grooms can’t look as good as their brides on their wedding day.
The ones who made our list aren’t just devastatingly handsome and debonair but also get props for making that extra effort to really get into the traditions and dress the part. Preity Zinta’s American beau Gene Goodenough donned a sherwani complete with a gold waist belt and even carried a sword as is customary for grooms in certain Indian religions. Karan Singh Grover married Bipasha Basu in an all white South Indian ensemble with a traditionally draped dhoti. Cricketer Yuvraj Singh who has always loved the glitz and glam that comes with being part of Team India, gave his fans an intimate peak into his wedding looks by doing a professional photo shoot and circulating the pictures. He also stuck with ethnic wear for both his wedding ceremonies but chose some really snazzy pieces that ensured his stunning bride Hazel Keech didn’t overshadow him.
Although what the guests wear to a wedding is hardly important since it’s the bride and groom’s day, let’s face it, Indian celebrity wedding are also the ultimate fashion face off between all those famous attendees. No one wants to be left off the fashion pages and everyone wants to be written about in the best dressed lists.
The sheer number of guests invited to an Indian celebrity wedding makes picking the best dressed guests even harder than picking the best dressed brides and grooms. But with such high stakes of being photographed we’re sure a massive teams of stylists, designers, hairdressers and make artists are enlisted to ensure the celebrity stands out in a sea of well heeled and impossibly coiffed fabulous people. Jacqueline Fernandez at Asin’s wedding was totally on point with her simple draped cream silk saree and South India inspired gold jewellery. Also seen at Asin’s wedding reception was Sushmita Sen in a shimmery gold lehenga choli that was ideal wedding guest attire. Malaika Arora Khan wore an understated powder blue lehenga with layered neckpieces that was equal parts subtle and glam making her a picture perfect wedding guest for Bipasha Basu’s reception. Attending the same function and proving that black doesn’t have to be relegated to the western wear section of our closets was Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who walked in hand in hand with hubby Abhishek in a floral gota embroidered jacket over a cream crushed velvet lehenga.
