Producer Communities for Aari Embroidery

The expert ‘Kargiars’ or artisans of aari embroidery are largely situated in Gujarat and Sindh areas. Since the introduction of machine embroidery, modern karigars continue this handicraft in order to preserve the dying art. 


To its core, this art from has remained unchanged. As the technique travelled out to other states of India, it formed different names and variations in style. It is popularly know as ‘Kashida’ embroidery in Kashmir, ‘Maggam in the south of India and ‘Ahir’ by the Ahir tribe of Gujarat. Today this craft can be seen on traditional garments across various states of India and in couture collection of major fashion houses in Europe.
