A four time national award winner for making it to the acme of the fashion world, having left her mark in more than 300 films, both Indian and international, Neeta Lulla is indeed a woman of the “now”.
Seeing how successful she is today, it is hard to tell that this amazing designer's career had quite a humble beginning. She started off as an assistant to the former leading Indian fashion choreographer, Jeanne Naoroji, in the 1980s. After having gained considerable knowledge and experience in the field, she ventured into the stream of Bollywood Costume Designing and has been going from strength to strength ever since.
Simplicity and elegance, class and modesty, all become the creations of this artistic genius. Madhuri and her signature step in the song ‘Maar Dala’ aren't the only things one remembers from the famous movie “Devdas”, as flashes of green embroidery fill every Bollywood fan’s mind with jolts of flamboyance from her costume, which was indeed the works of Neeta Lulla. Be it the regal yet subtle looks for actors, or simplistic yet feminine attires for the actresses, Neeta has contributed to all the memorabilia.
Having over 350 films’ costumes to her name and being the proud founder of her very own school of fashion, otherwise known as “Whistling Woods” there might hardly be something she hasn't ventured into. Bollywood actresses like Aishwarya Rai, Sridevi, Juhi Chawla, Sushmita Sen, Kareena Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone are few of the many famous personalities she has worked with, while the list shines bright with names like Shah Rukh Khan, Rajinikanth, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan when it comes to actors.
She went on to bag the Zee Cine Award for Best Costume Designer in the year 2003, the Kingfisher Fashion Award in 2005, the Fashion National Film Award for Best Costume Design and the IIFA Best Costume Design Award, both in 2009 and countless others for her ingenuity, innovation, and pure brilliance in this ever-evolving field of fashion.
Neeta is without a doubt, an inspiration to the nation as a designer with a keen eye for detail as well as a woman with guts. Not only that, she is also a proud mother to the budding fashionista, Nishka, who under her guidance and counsel, is speculated to be making quite the debut in the fashion industry.
