Bibhu Mohapatra is an Indian-American fashion designer. Unlike most famous fashion designers, Bibhu Mohapatra earned much of his success before even launching his own label in 2008.
Starting out as a Masters graduate in economics from Utah State University in 1996 he decided to follow a career path in the fashion industry. He quickly moved to New York City in 1997 to enrol himself at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Whilst still studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology, he was awarded a Fashion Industry of Technology’s Critic’s award for “Best Evening Wear Designer of the Year.
By 1999 Bibhu Mohapatra had been named Design Director of J Mendel, a French brand. Bibhu Mohapatra spent the next decade converting the brand to emphasise on more youthful looks whilst growing the ready to wear collections of the brand. His ideas for the business have been credited in well-known magazines like Vogue, Forbes and the Wall Street Journal.
Late in 2008 Bibhu Mohapatra decided to resign so that he could launch his own designer label, specialising in luxury womenswear. His line offers a ready to wear collection, couture and styles made from fur. Since launching his label, he has made appearances at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and Lakme Fashion Week.
