At a very young age Arpita Mehta discovered her love for the fashion industry and pursued the same, even sacrificing a promising career in sciences. Graduating from S.N.D.T Women’s University in Mumbai, majoring in apparel manufacture and dress design, she quickly decided to go down a conventional route into the fashion industry. The designer started her career by getting an internship with Manish Malhotra. It was here that she spent two years learning fundamental skills and techniques of the Indian fashion industry.
After two successful years with Manish Malhotra she finally decided to launch her own label focusing on “understated, attractive and detailed silhouettes”. She describes her label as “easy, fun glamorous and fresh”. Her collections consist of both traditional Indian clothing as well fusion clothing. She gives extra attention to intricate embroidery using anchor threads and interesting mirror work.
From her studio based out of Juhu (Mumbai), Arpita Mehta retails from designer outlets across India including in Delhi and Mumbai. Her ‘Starlight’ collection, which was seen at Lakme Fashion Week 2014 incorporated a number of different fabrics including silk and flat chiffons. The designer received good feedback from critics and was inspired by her grandmother’s love for vintage cocktail dresses and Indian opulence.
