Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla

Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, affectionately called ‘The Boys’ in fashion circuits are two contra distinct people who combined forces in 1986 to give India one of the most remarkable fashion house.  Abu jani was born in Mumbai and its glamorous backdrop served as his initial inspiration towards fashion. The upbringing of Abu Jani in his opulent Bohra Muslim family exposed him to the lifestyle and exclusive designer fashion of the glamorous high society of Mumbai, widening his vision with women couture in an era when being fashion designer itself was not a profession. Like all designers of that era, he began his journey in the fashion industry by assisting Xerxes Bhatena who was a renowned film costume designer.

Sandeep Khosla belongs to Kapurthala, Punjab and he joined his family leather business after completing his education. Sandeep Khosla is passionate about subtle dye patterns on cloth which he developed in his years with family business by specialising in dying techniques. He later worked in garment exports and gained knowledge of fabrics, materials and designs. He took an audacious step and settled in Delhi to launch his label ‘Limelight’, however in a brilliant stroke of serendipity he moved to Mumbai to work with Xerxes Bhatena , the same designer Abu Jani worked with and then as it famously said, rest is history.

Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla launched their Couture house in 1986 and celebrated their 25 years in fashion industry in 2012. Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla’s flagship store in Mumbai is the top destination for upcoming designers to get a remarkable start in fashion Industry. The duo is attributed as the first Indian designers whose creations were featured in Harrods.

The dynamic duo is accredited for reviving Chikinkari and Zardosi work, which was earlier, restricted to their native parts of India and were not used elaborately on the ramp. Ethnic wear designed by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla marks the eclectic use of warm and electric pallet of pink, red, black, and blue hues. These designs evidently feature bodice silhouettes at torsos followed by generous flares, complimenting the body type of Indian women. Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla launched their Renaissance Bridal Collection in August 2014 that redefined bridal wears fashion in India. With this collection Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla reinvented traditional mirror embroidery, chikan work on sheer fabrics and rich silk embroidery in wedding dresses. The silhouettes drawn resembled the Mughal era designs with plush use of golden embroidery motifs and borders.

Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla are connoisseurs of using modern art forms in couture. They surprised the fashion industry by using architectural art deco inspired motifs in their designs for the red carpet dress of Melita Toscan du Plantier. Enticing light shades with chikankari is the signature style of Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla , which was taken on international red carpets by the illustrious client of the duo, dame Judy Dench .  The duo considers Dimple Kapadia their eternal muse and the actress has been associated with them from the beginning of their couture house in Mumbai 28 years back. Other eminent clients of Abu Jani are Jaya Bacchan, Amitabh Bacchan and Aishwarya Rai.

Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla’s Fashion journey of 27 years has been captured in two volumes of coffee table book India Fantastique.
