Wendell Rodricks discussed that he believed it was important to focus on the rich Indian culture when creating Indian designs. He believed that Indian fashion designers should promote the weaves from the states of Maheshwar, Manipur and Varanasi so that India gets credited for its amazing cultural heritage.
He doesn’t like the fact that retailers like Mango and Zara copy the embroidery work and it then becomes that retailer’s trend. It is important to emphasize that the patterns and textiles come from India because that is what makes India unique as a fashion hub.
In an interview he stated, “We need to push our Indian culture further so that people realize that we have more to offer to the world than the West has to offer. What West has to offer – they have skirt, trouser, frock, evening and cocktail dress that’s it… We have so much more.”
Rodricks stated that India is making quite an impact in the fashion world, however he still feels that there is a lot of work to be done.
“One needs to look beyond and have ‘our India trend’. We need to grow organically and we don’t need to look at west and say… we need to make our fashion look like Paris or etc, we need to make our fashion look Indian. The beauty of India is we have a huge diversity and large repertoire of garments that we need to explore.”
