Young and talented Indian designer Sonaakshi Raaj opened a store in Khar, Mumbai last week. During an interview with the designer, she mentions her take on fashion and her expansion plans.

Her store in Khar showcases the beauty of cheerful colours such as yellow, pink, emerald green, red and crimson where she also uses pearl, zardosi, beads and sequins against a white backdrop.

At only 25 years old, the designer’s idea was to make her outfits the main attraction of the minimalist designed store in Khar. The store features a stunning chandelier, trees that are painted and cabinets that consist of accessories by other designers.

The designer is known for her modern Indian wear and her signature ensembles like sari-gowns that are worn by Bollywood celebrities like Malaika Arora Khan and Deepika Padukone.

Sonaakshi Raaj also mentions that her shop is a reflection of her personality which is classy yet simple. Her logo is also a reflection of this as it is crisp, neat, black and white.

Earlier Sonaakshi used to deal with her clients from her workshop in Juhu but she felt it was important to open her own store as customers can also try on her clothes and experience her designs first hand before purchasing them. Her store also lets her customers view her creations at one time.

Her fashion sensibilities are modern and she gives each of her outfits a western touch even if it is an Indian silhouette and this is what gives her pieces an extra edge. She feels that this is what makes her designs unique and work commercially. She further says that this style of design is definitely her forte that she wishes to build on.

When talking about her inspirations she explains that she loves to diverge from stereotypes and she actually imagines herself wearing each of her creations to see if it is an outfit that she will love and only then starts tailoring it. She further mentions that she is lucky enough to have her own store in just 3 years of entering the fashion industry, right near established designers such as Rajesh Pratap Singh and Azeem Khan.

While talking about her future plans, she also mentions that her aim is to be experimental and capitalise on these unique fashion sensibilities that set her designs apart!
