Sabyasachi Mukherjee - Bollywood Rules
10 th Aug 2012

Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has finally spoken up - in contrast to designers who complain that Bollywood rules the fashion industry base in terms of setting trends, Sabyasachi Mukherjee states, “The high and mighty who sit on their high horses and criticise those who design for Bollywood stars are doing so only because they don’t get any work themselves.” Responding harshly to a debate, that came up recently, about whether fashion designers should concentrate on dressing actors for films, Sabyasachi, who is one of India’s most popular designers in the Bollywood world besides Manish Malhotra, says, “I have no qualms in admitting that I exploit Bollywood to advance my business. Why shouldn’t I? Bollywood is practically a religion in India. And if any designer says that they are not interested in designing for filmstars, it’s a classic case of grapes being sour.” “The gossip mongers clearly have nothing better to do. In a couture week, all shows are equal and there’s no grand finale. I would’ve happily settled for a show on any day. In my entire career, I’ve never thrown tantrums or asked for sponsors. For me, the show is all about getting buyers, not pleasing organisers in Delhi or Mumbai. Because of this Delhi-Mumbai tussle, I don’t socialise with designers at all. I have no friends in the fraternity. And I don’t belong to any group. I live in the no man’s land.” Commenting on the rumours on some blogs about senior designers like Sabyasachi throwing their weight around, FDCI president Sunil Sethi said, “Of all the designers, Sabya is the least demanding. He even foots the bill for his staff and extra models. It is a sheer privilege for Delhi’s Couture Week to have him do the last show. We pursued him, he did not!” _______________________________________________________________________________ Shop Indian Clothes at Strand of Silk
