With the purpose of endorsing khadi, the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) recently worked with Gujarat State Khadi and Village Industries Board and directed an exceptional fashion show within Ahmedabad entitled 'From Huts to the High Street'. Set at The Sardar Patel National Museum, three of India’s favourite designers were showcased: Anamika Khanna, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Rohit Bal — presenting their exclusive collections. The president of FDCI, Sunni Sethi stated that he thought the big showstopper of the event had to be khadi, and that the fashion show is a way of supporting the hard working weavers who are working within the struggling industry.
Around 70 models sauntered down the catwalk at the event, whilst Kutch-based traditional folk musician Samandar Khan played the background music to the shows as he put on an amazing performance with the 29 participants of his troupe. Rajesh Pratap was already working on his denim-khadi collection and he got on board a few men from the Rabari tribe of Gujarat to walk the ramp. He made denim khadi jackets for them.
Fashionista and Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor walked down the ramp in a gorgeous outfit that included a khadi blouse teamed with gold embellishments by Khanna and beautiful floral lehenga by Bal, teamed with a stylish long length jacket by Pratap.
