Veteran fashion designer Ritu Kumar commented on the progress of the Indian fashion industry, describing it as having come far in recent years, "the Indian fashion industry has grown from a non-existent industry to a rich, vibrant one now. There is a revival in indigenous textiles. However, we need to go very far... though the beginning has been made."
The designer, who has been active in the industry for over 40 years, called for an emphasis to be made on preserving traditional techniques and styles. Coming from humble beginnings herself, Kumar launched boutique fashion culture in her country, and has been a driving force behind the phenomenon she describes. Her designs have been worn by countless celebrities - her styles were even worn in Britain by the late Princess Diana.
Doubtless, she will continue to influence Indian fashion for the rest of her life and career.
