Indian Designer Rahul Mishra won this year’s International Woolmark Prize at the Milan Fashion Week. The International Wool Secretariat started in 1954 and has proved incredibly successful boosting the careers of the fashion icons Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld. The fashion intelligentsia brands featured 40 countries and a very famous panel featuring stars of fashion, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Italia, Franca Sozzani, Editor-at-Large Vogue China, Angelica Cheung, Creative Director, Frida Giannini, Gucci as well as fashion commentator Alexa Chung.
Rahul Mishra won this year’s Woolmark prize for a series of amazing outfits. The most successful garments were the merino wool cocktail dresses that won the big prize of $100,000. Mishra’s classroom project at the National Institute of Design Kanpur was showcased at The Lakme India Fashion Week. The Kerala featured the ‘mundu’ which changes colour when reversed.
Mishra believes that handcrafted clothing should always lead the way. He has worked with banhini, chickankari, bhagalpuri and banarasi. His mentor is Sunil Sethi who is chairman of Fashion Design Council of India. Sethi encouraged Mishra to stay true to himself and believe in his initial design.
His Woolmark collection is to be showcased internationally in the stores of leading retailers all over the world, New York, David Jones in Australia, Colette in Paris and Mytheresa.com in Germany.
