Fashion Designer Payal Pratap, wife of the well-known designer Rajesh Pratap Singh, made her debut at the opening of the Wills Lifestyle Indian Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2013 (WIFW). She showcased her new collection on Day 1 of the Fashion Week.
After working many years for her husband’s brand, Prayal is launching her own collection. “Of course, I am nervous, even though I’ve been in the industry for more than 15 years. I started retailing my clothes in 2010 and was surprised by the response from clients and stores,” she says. Her collection, titled "Gates of Dawn" inspired from Gujarat's Kutch desert was dominated by use of bright colors in light weight fabrics, marked by extensive use of minute geometric, cross stich and hand detailing. The clothes had hand-woven textiles with chanderis and moga silk.
"I am working only on Indian market with lots of Indian clothes - saris , kurtas combined with lot of modern style draping and pleating. I have used urban western style my collection because I wanted to show it in a very modern way on ramp," she said. Payal, who is someone very simple and humble uses to dress up in plain shirts and jeans with almost no make-up and jewelry. She attends very few late-night parties and joins her two children at home when she can.
“For a minute, I did think that people might just address me as Rajesh’s wife but the market has changed and people place the products first,” she says. After her debut today, Payal will be backstage on Sunday evening, helping Rajesh as he showcases his Spring-Summer collection at WIFW.
