Payal Jain; This name is not new to all fashion readers. She is a successful designer who is a known for her creativity on the ramp for major fashion shows across the globe. This fellow member of Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), is an alumna of Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), San Fransisco, U.S.A. In a crisp conversation with BM, she talks about the popular fashion trends for this season.

BM: According to you, what is Spring-Summer 2012, all about?

Payal Jain: SS-2012 is all about bright-soft colours, soft fabrics, and a happy feel. Comfort is a big factor. As it is summers, people tend to prefer all types of comfortable fabrics like jerseys, knits and cottons. Drapes is a huge hit.

BM: If one is to cite out the major differences between the trends of 2011 and 2012, what would it be?

PJ: 2011 was a very structured year when comes to fashion trends. This year, masses are moving towards a more relaxed and comfortable style. Moreover, as compared to the last year, which was more towards the masculine nature of style, this year it’s loud, fun and chirpy.

BM: Indian heritage has huge hits in fabrics; for instance, zari, brocade and chanderi fabrics. Do you think west would be able to incorporate these fabrics in their style statements?

PJ: Oh! It is being loved everywhere. Fabrics like zari and brocade have a huge demand in the west. In fact, these fabrics come under the umbrella of Indian heritage and have been representing India during International Fashion weeks. Not only now, but these fabrics would always be a huge hit. They are evergreen.

BM: What colours do you think, suit the Indian skin tones, the most?

PJ: India is such a huge country, it’s very difficult to generalize. But still, if talking about colours, I would say, rich, warm colours.

BM: A colour that is there on your mind, right now.

PJ: Orange.
