The Indian fashion designer Naeem Khan hopes to grow his brand in India. Khan moved to The US as a teenager and apprenticed for classic American fashion house Halston where he learnt about the secrets of cutting fabric to create timeless silhouettes and learnt the secrets of draping. At the moment he is very popular in the United States as his designs are worn by famous personalities like First Lady Michelle Obama. His other celebrity clients include Penelope Cruz, Beyonce and Taylor Swift. .
He states however that he would like his designs to be worn by Indian celebrities and in particular leading actresses such as Deepika Padukone. He stated, “I have taken a lot from India and I have still not given back to it. I have this hope that one day I will go back and make the most amazing collection for India.”
Khan has tried to further his brand in India through exhibiting his autumn/winter collection, inspired by the world of cabaret at last year’s Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai. The pieces he showcased included trumpet gowns, evening coats, pants and cocktail dresses that were embellished with ostrich feather hems, floral applique work and jewel trims.
Khan explained that the main problem stopping him from expanding in India was that he did not have his own pre-standing stores there yet. He hopes to establish a store soon to not only sell his clothing range but also to include his cosmetics and fragrances.
