For Shilpa Chavan, creating elaborate and over the top headpieces is a passion. The designer has created styles for leading ladies from both Bollywood and Hollywood. Using an eclectic mix of materials (and boy is it eclectic) including pieces of wood, packaging material and even toys, the more outlandish the end result, the better.
Shilpa says, "I get inspiration during my travels and from unusual things. It could be a scrapyard, the roadside or trees,” says 40-year-old Chavan who hoards variety of objects - with the possibility of gaining inspiration from these things.
The designer has exhibited her collection this year at Paris Fashion Week and at London Fashion week. The collection included large headpieces that were worn over de-constructed Saris that were also designed by her.
Shilpa got hooked to hats at an early age, after seeing the picture of Audrey Hepburn at the famous horse race scene at Ascot from the movie "My Fair Lady". Now the designer's collections are sought after by leading Indian designers to include in their runway shows so that they can add a touch of drama and mystery to their collections. Designers from Tarun Tahiliani, Malini Ramani and Manish Arora have used her headgear for their shows.
