Despite having established herself as a designer for more than 20 years, Krishna Mehta calls herself a “weaver and textile person.” She says, “There’s a real need today for designers to revive their heritage. International buyers are not coming to India for gowns made of Chinese silk. Instead they want something that’s authentically Indian. Our focus right now is on getting more business for these crafts.” She believes that in order to preserve the art, Indian designers need to take this to a different level. But, she does feel that a certain amount of awareness has seeped in. “Young designers can turn traditional textiles into something more modern. That will also help keep the economy going. I amalgamate various textiles in my ensembles, a blouse from Benaras with a bottom from Andhra Pradesh. They blend seamlessly together and that’s the beauty of our heritage,” she says. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Shop Indian Fashion at Strand of Silk
