This year, weaves are becoming more and more present on the catwalks in India. Many well-known designers have experimented with this type of fabric in their new collections. Ritu Kumar created an elegant line of wrap jackets, dresses, kaftans, capes, pencil skirts and cigarette pants using hand-woven back strap loomed fabrics, like kanni weaves, hand-spun khadi and woven silks. Other big names for weaves include Rahul Mishra, who used woven textiles from Madhya Pradesh flaunting floral motifs for his kalidaars, bundgalas and woven jackets.
Krishna Mehta experimented with Manipur handloom and Guarang Shah used the jamdani technique of weaving for his Paanchali collection. “These wonderful weaves cannot be restricted as a seasonal trend, they go beyond that. Designs on handloom are a reflection of the our heritage and it calls for preservation and awareness,” maintains Gaurang.
