Varanasi or the more famously known Banaras can be summed up in its ghats, sadhus, galiyaans, paan and silk saris. To the loss of the city and the nation, the iconic Banarasi sari seems to be losing its charm with the buyers. Fortunately, the Central Government has taken cognition of the issue and is in the process of ensuring that the old world charm of Banaras is restored with the Banarasi silk saris reinstated to it its previous seat of glory.

In this effort, some of the well known designers in India have decided to create exclusive silk saris in partnership with the various weaver clusters in Varanasi. The best of these designs would then be displayed in stores within and across India in an effort to help the classic sari make a comeback under the initiative of BJP leader Shaina NC, who is herself a designer of repute.

Shaina has also met with Santosh Gangwar, Union  Minister of State for Textiles, to bring the project under the Make in India intiative. Notable designers taking part in the project involve Varun Behl, Anita Dongre, Shruti Sancheti, Manish Malhotra, Abu Jani, Ritu Kumar and Rina Dhaka. If successful, the project is likely to give employment to at least one thousand people in Varanasi.
