For a long time the fashion industry has been stubbornly set in its ways. There has only been one type of model that has graced catwalks or the covers of glossy magazines: Tall thin women.
That however has started to change. First Caitlin Jenner appeared on many a magazine cover, with many big editorial brands eager to snag the scoop of the year. Now Indian fashion designer Sharmila Nair of Red Lotus has gone one step further to try and make fashion a more inclusive entity. She has created a new collection called Mazhavil (rainbow), which was inspired by the transgender community.
Sharmila celebrates transgender women through her vibrant collection and so for her it was a no-brainer that transgender models should be the face of the campaign.
Maya Menon and Gowi Savithri were both chosen by Sharmila to star in the collection’s campaign. Talking to International Business Time, Maya said “I had always loved wearing a saree, but couldn’t do so in public for a long term. This shoot was extra-special to me.”
Since its launch the collection has gone viral around the world being lauded as groundbreaking. Sharmila now hopes that other designers will start to follow suit.
