Indian designers are charming Hollywood's style divas. It's a moment to celebrate Indian style. Aishwarya Rai may have snubbed Indian designers when she picked up an Elle Saab outfit to wear at Cannes this year. But Hollywood divas are going gaga over Indian designers, as they confidently pick up 'stylish' outfits from India's leading designers. Indian fashion is going global — with Hollywood stars shopping for embellished kurtis, clingy gowns, studded clutches and elegant saris from desi designers. Super-glam showstoppers! Recently, Heidi Klum was spotted in a Manish Arora outfit from his 2011 Fall collection, along with Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz on Wetten Das, a German TV show. Says Manish Arora, "It's always an honour to see your designs on people who shine in their fields. With her statuesque proportion and perfect body, Heidi does complete justice to the dress and tights from my latest collection." Designer Bibhu Mohapatra styled Hillary Swank, Salma Hayek, Sienna Miller and Angelina Jolie. Uma Thurman, Cindy Crawford, Pamela Anderson and Anna Kournikova have picked up designer Rohit Bal's outfits. There's New York based designer Naeem Khan, who d e s i g n e d actor Ann e t t e B e n - ing's gown that she wore to the Oscar ceremony this year. Last year for her birthday, Madonna wore a Falguni and Shane outfit in gold and black. "It's been a pleasant surprise, our outfits have been picked up by a lot of Hollywood stars — even Britney Spears and Kate Perry. We feel proud that the West likes our mix of modern and traditional aesthetics," says designer Shane. Power of design! It's a 'wow' moment for any Indian designer to spot a Hollywood star in his creation. Says designer Suneet Varma, "We're going beyond the 'wow' factor. Hollywood likes our mix of fashion aesthetics and we're bringing freshness to their world of fashion. Works by Manish Arora, Naeem Khan, Falguni and Shane Peacock and Bibhu Mohapatra have affirmed their presence and undeniable success in the international fashion circuit. After having worked with Nicole Farhi and Yves Saint Laurent in my early years, I've developed an affinity towards extending my design sensibility across different design mediums. Creating my signature line for Judith Leiber New York as their international designer has been a fantastic experience for me. I get to sell my creations in stores like Bergdoff Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Harrods and Selfridges. Hollywood stars like Catherine Zeta Jones, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey have been spotted carrying my handbags." What style works globally? "The design shouldn't be overtly ethnic." Indian chic The urge to look royal and Indian at classy events is also becoming a big trend. Says designer Ritu Kumar, "The look is young and royal. Recently, Mischa Barton, Melanie Brown (former member of the Spice Girls), Ana Ivanovich have been spotted dressed in 'Label', one of our brands. Hollywood actor Alexia Rasmussen will wear our outfit in her upcoming movie California Solo. Indian designers are getting more exposure and the West is accessing their outfits more easily. Says designer Raghavendra Rathore, "I was so charmed to have Francesco Clemente, the renowned artiste, select the Rathore bandgala for a charity event in New York. It is the acceptance of the product and the exposure that is bringing acknowledgment to the Indian design world." The fame list! The international fame list of designers is getting bigger. Designer Gautam Rakha received a handwritten note by Victoria Beckham for a Rabani and Rakha gown made for her. Says designer Gaurav Rakha, "Clothes by Indian designers are so eclectic and vibrant. I think Manish Arora has given a different boost to fashion in global market. It's just not the designs or the silhouettes but also the craftsmanship and intricate embroideries which are exclusive. They make us stand out. That's why even Elizabeth Hurley and Bhawana Knight Shyamalan have been spotted in our saris and Victoria Beckham loved out evening gown." The red carpet never before dazzled with so many Indian designers styling superglam divas! Indeed, fashion has a desi touch!
