Last Friday Indian fashion designer Ashish Gupta celebrated his milestone tenth-year showing at London Fashion Week, with a retrospective at the Victoria & Albert Museum. The London-based fashion designer created his label Ashish ten years ago after being inspired by Dorothy’s ruby-red slippers as a student, while studying for his MA at Central Saint Martin’s in London.
The V&A retrospective involved four fashion shows which were open to the public and available via live stream. It featured 30 of the labels famous sequined pieces which have been worn by the likes of Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus.
Gupta believes that the wide appeal of his clothes and his long-standing success is down to the fact that sequinned pieces garner a reaction from people, which is ‘addictive’ for the wearer.
The Ashish label revived the sequinned look that was so popular in the 1980s by pairing sequins with streetwear and sportswear, and therefore moving away from the reputation of sequinned clothes being disco attire.
