Bibhu Mohapatra, award-winning Indian designer, showcased his winter collection 2014 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2014 in New York, on Wednesday. This collection, inspired by Tibet, has been designed for the ‘global woman’.
It comes to no surprise that this respected designer, who has dressed Michelle Obama in the past, created colourful and stunning looks, which were flaunted down the runway. The collection was unique and creative, including an extravagant alligator coat with sable trim and cropped bomber jackets with raccoon collars.
Tibet was his inspiration because, "It's a land that is so close to my homeland, and it's the spirituality, bonding that kind of got me in there," Mohapatra explained. "The beautiful, vast landscapes and the beautiful people and their beliefs, and their day-to-day lives is what captured me", he added. His breathtaking collection was varied and full of prints and beaded insets with the traditional Tibetan pangden pattern of offset stripes.
The collection showcased was designed for women who are "really global with beautifully crafted clothes”, said Bibhu.
