Anita Dongre - Fusionist: Designer Anita Dongre

She doesn't have the bling of a Manish Malhotra, the quirkiness of a Manish Arora, the high-brow quality of a Sabyasachi or the flamboyance of a Falguni and Shane; yet slowly and steadily designer Anita Dongre in all her subtle simmering glory has been hogging the red carpet for the past few months and is humble enough to let her designs speak for themselves. Lifestyle got into a conversation with the designer and other industry experts on what's making her tick with celebrities of various body types, age groups and style temperaments. Her recent outing at the Lakme Fashion Week earlier this month, saw a full house of fashionistas, style snobs and chic superiors. Her collection was an eclectic recipe with flavours of Benares silk and cotton and brocade weaves, blended with tie and dye, handpainted silks of Jaipur, ikats of Andhra Pradesh and chikankari of Lucknow. For many who consider anything 'desi' a bit outdated or too matronly, Anita's designs are a gentle nudge to change that perception. Her indianness packaged in a clever contemporary way is what has got her a wide fan base today making her one of the most commercially viable designers that we have. One would think there would not be much in common between the wardrobes and style sensibilities of a Neetu Chandra and a Sonam Kapoor. If the former is a low key rather reluctant fashionista, the other is fashion's favourite child. Neetu Chandra has Indian written all over her, whereas Sonam is a global style icon. Yet in the last month, both have got favourable reviews for sporting Dongre's designs. Both the outfits were as different from one another as can be. One a simple tie and dye gown with a plunging neckline, the other a more fashion forward frock with a traditional print. It's her versatility as a designer that seems to be working mostly for Dongre right now making her a favourite choice of celebrity stylists. Talking about her rise on the red carpet, Dongre says, 'I don't think I've made any drastic changes keeping the red carpet in mind. So far I was only focusing on my prĂȘt wear, and only very recently started making more evening wear pieces, which is why you are seeing them on the red carpet.'One a simple tie and dye gown with a plunging neckline, the other a more fashion forward frock with a traditional print.
