At the latest Lakmé Fashion Week, Anavila Misra created her fashion line without shoes. The designer’s models walked shoeless. Sarees, as well, were made in a simple way to show ankles and barefeet.
“When I was travelling to Himachal Pradesh, I met villagers walking on foot without shoes in the hilly region,” recounts Misra. “When I queried them, they described the connectedness they felt with Mother Earth when barefoot. They said they went through their entire adult lives with just one pair of shoes, so they’d rather save them for special days,” she announced.
According to Misra the debutant designer Sreejith Jeevan, displayed some pieces on barefeet and red legs, artistically painted. In the past, other Indian designers such as Paromita Banerjee and Anupamaa Daya, have shown models without shoes on the ramp.
And now a lot of Indian designers are inspired by rural or traditional ways of life.
